Scope and Content

In the opening letter of the series Dudgeon requests Owen to write him introductions to his acquaintances in America, as Dudgeon intends to emigrate there. He does so, and whist there visits the Shaker community at New Lebanon, New York [it is not clear if he lives there], before returning to Britain. In later life the letters to Owen make regular reference to their previous meeting, their agreement on many thoughts concerning society and their differing views of religion.

Administrative / Biographical History

Dudgeon emigrated from Falkirk, Scotland (c1831) to USA, before returning some time before 1847. Around 1805 he spent the night as a guest at Owen's residence Braxfield House, New Lanark, Scotland.
