In this manuscript letter reference is made to the appointment of David Dale Owen to [geologically] survey the state of Wisconsin. Robert Dale called into the office of Secretary of the Treasury who was able to confirm the appointment. The expected salary should be about $2000 per year. Robert Dale believes David has been lucky, as getting paid $2000 dollars per year to survey "comparatively unknown [and] very interesting" country is a "good deal better" that shooting Mexicans for half that sum.
