Letter from Mary O. Macdaniel to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

Manuscript letter, in which Macdaniel asks Owen to write her a few lines. She explains that, whilst she is sympathetic with Owen's views, being an invalid prevents her from attending any of Owen's lectures.

Macdaniel tells of her son living in Carolina [United States] where he works in a mine and enjoys the warm climate found there. However, he always perceives a "mental darkness" anywhere there is Slavery.

Macdaniel writes of her own personal circumstances, explaining that she currently lives with the wife [Mary Cheney Greeley] of Horace Greely [Greeley], editor of the New York Tribune. Mrs Greely has come to Europe with her children "in search of health" and, in the Spring, Horace intends joining them and together they will head to "the Continent". Mrs Greeley is said have "deep insight to the Spiritual manifestations".
