Letter from Samuel Austin to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

In this manuscript letter Atkins gives a detailed impression of the turmoil at the Labour Exchange, Charlotte Street, London at which Atkins is employed in some capacity. Disagreements between the Committee and the Officers appear frequent; the Committee has vetoed Atkins' plans to pay off the debts of the exchange; a number of accounts remain unsettled, and these will do so until Owen returns. Atkins writes he would not have minded all the "harrassing that we have experienced from day to day" if the Committee had not stopped paying him; explains to Owen that while he does not wish to burden him with such "rigmarole" but he felt he must being unable to supply the money which Owen asked.
