Tranent and Haddington Co-operative Society

This series consists of records created by the Tranent and Haddington Co-operative Society. These include financial records, buildings records, correspondence, press cuttings, and photographs.

The Tranent and Haddington Co-operative Society was formed after a merger of the Societies based in the Tranent and Haddington areas. This merger created a near monopoly of the market in the area.

The Tranent and Haddington Society was short lived as a further merger took place only four years later between itself and the Societies of Dunbar and Westbarns, and Duns. This merger formed the East Lothian Co-operative Society. This society continued to grow and make profits through the war and by 1945 almost 12,000 of East Lothian’s population were members of the Society at the Tranent store alone.
