Letter from Pitre-Chevalier to Hugo

Scope and Content

Autograph letter to Hugo asking whether his father had been the young captain who had once prevented the massacre by his own Republican troops of 800 Vendéens prisoners in the Château d'Aux. The writer also mentions trouble he has had at the Théâtre Français because a work (in which, he swears, he had not part) based on his Jean de Bourgogne might be publicly ascribed to him.

The massacre of the Château d'Aux took place in 2 and 3 April 1794 during the War in the Vendée. Hugo's father told the events in his Mémoires.
