Scope and Content

Autograph letter to Hugo joyfully reminding him a famous diner between them and Balzac, who predicted that Lenz would become a writer. Ten years later, in 1852, he published a book on Beethoven. Lenz also says he has read Les Misérables and praises Hugo's talent.

Written at St Petersburg.

Marked 'r' (répondu) in Hugo's hand.

This letter was published by Marcel Bouteron and Madeleine Fargeaud in L'Année Balzacienne 1962, Paris, Garnier Frères.

Bought from Loliée on 27 April 1964 for 180 francs.

Lenz was a French writer, specialized in the history of music. He moved to Russia where he became Councillor of State.
