File: Museum of Science and Industry

Scope and Content

File relating to the University's association with Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester. Primarily supported by UMIST, the University did provide some financial backing for the Museum. The file includes the earliest discussions of the "science museum" proposal in 1959, a paper authored by Donald Cardwell and William Johnson,"The proposed Manchester Museum of Science and Technology" and a response by Professor Jack Diamond "Museum of Industrial Archaeology" (both 1963). There are also details of working arrangements with UMIST and Manchester Corporation concerning the launch of the Museum (originally at Oddfellows Hall), possible new sites for the Museum, and the withdrawal of University funding for the Museum in 1976/7.
