File: Finniston Report

Scope and Content

Papers relating to the University's response to the Finniston Report on engineering education. A committee chaired by Sir Monty Finniston (1912-1991) had reported in 1979 into the state of British education and training of engineers. The report made recommendations relating to university engineering courses. Most of the file comprises routine correspondence and circulars of bodies such as the CVCP and the CBI. There is also a copy of a letter to Finniston from the University's engineering professors (21 May 1979) expressing dissent from an official submission to the Finniston Committee by the Committee of Engineering Professors' conference (concerning the involvement of a proposed Engineering Council in university education). There are comments on the Report by Professors Fritz Ursell and W B Hall, papers of the University working party established on the implications of the Report, and an official statement by the University on the Finniston Report (February 1980).
