Scope and Content

Papers relating to the University's Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Mostly routine administrative papers, but following papers of particular interest:

  • Memorandum the Department by Professor Matheson, following his appointment (1951);
  • "Memorandum on the future of engineering education in Manchester", (1954) discussing relations with Faculty of Technology engineering departments;
  • Memorandum: "Civil and mechanical engineering in the Faculty of Science" (1955) proposing a new engineering building [the Simon Engineering building opened in the early 1960s].
  • Paper by Professor D M McDowell, "School curriculum reform, recruitment and entry to engineering courses" (1968), includes correspondence related to proposals to change sixth-form curriculum.

Other subjects include the formation of the Osborne Reynolds Society; the impact of the Fielden report on industrial design (1963), and the 1851 scholarships scheme
