File: Gawthorpe Hall

Scope and Content

Gawthorpe Hall was the ancestral home of the Kay-Shuttleworth family, near Burnley, Lancashire. In the 1950s the Hon. Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth proposed to develop the Hall as a centre for arts and crafts, associated with adult education. The University's Department of Extra-Mural Studies was involved in discussions about this proposals, and the file includes correspondence on this, and on fund-raising activities undertaken by the Gawthorpe Foundation (of which the vice-chancellor was a patron). Gawthorpe Hall is now owned by the National Trust.
