File: Appointments Board

Scope and Content

The Appointments Board (now known as the Careers Service) provided careers advice and support for University students (including UMIST students). The Board was headed by a Secretary (J.D. Culverwell to 1960, Bernard Holloway thereafter), and was overseen by the Appointments Board Committee. The file covers a wide range of topics including: salary of the Secretary, involvement of academic staff in Civil Service selection processes, possible use of Appointments Board services by local further education colleges and Manchester Polytechnic, returns of graduate first employment to the UGC, production of clearing house lists of employers, establishment of a central services unit for university career services, relations with particular employers (Army, Royal Navy, Post Office, police), and the development of computerisation at the Board in the early 1970s.
