The Department of Psychology was established in 1919, when Thomas Pear was appointed professor of psychology. The Department was originally part of the Faculty of Arts and was one of the largest in the country. During most of the period covered by this file, the Department was headed by John Cohen, who had been appointed to the chair in 1952. Most of the file comprises routine administrative matters, including departmental accommodation, details of research projects, discussion of a proposed diploma in educational psychology (child guidance) and the involvement of the Faculty of Education in this.
Folder 4 is discrete correspondence with Willy Goldman of the Park Mount Research Collegium Ltd, Maccesfield, an educational centre about possible collaboration on educational psychology projects (1970-1974). The University did not take up this offer.
