Correspondence and papers relating to Manchester University Settlement. The Settlement was established in 1895 by University members wishing to undertake social work in deprived areas of Manchester. The Settlement was residential and based in Ancoats. The Settlement was particularly active in undertaking welfare work for children and for investigating housing conditions. It also assisted the unemployed during the Depression. The vice-chancellor was chairman of its Council. The file contains material on aspects of administration, finances and social and research work undertaken by the Settlement.
