Correspondence and papers relating to the Universities China Committee in London, a body which encouraged cultural and educational relations with China. The UCCL was founded in 1926 and initially sought to provide material assistance for Chinese students studying in the UK. Following changes to the administration of the British Boxer Indemnity Funds in 1930-1931, the UCCL was granted administration of funds to increase its work in China, providing lecture tours, establishing China Institutes in London, Manchester and Edinburgh, and encouraging the development of Chinese studies in UK universities Funds were made available for chairs of Chinese at Oxford, Cambridge and London, and a readership at Manchester. The UCCL was forced to greatly curtail its activities following events in China in the 1940s and 1950s, with the China institutes closing in Manchester and London, but it continued to promote Chinese studies in British universities. The vice-chancellors of Manchester University from the 1920s to the 1970s had a formal association as ex-officio members of the Committee.
