File: Darbishire House Health Centre

Scope and Content

Extensive file of papers relating to the establishment and running of the Darbishire House Health Centre. Darbishire House taught general practice and social medicine to medical students under the auspices of the University. It was also intended to act a model health centre for the Manchester area. Its board of management included representatives of the University, Manchester Council, Manchester Local Medical Committee and the general practitioners who ran the Centre. The Centre was created as the result of grants from Nuffield Provincial Hospitals Trust and the Rockefeller Foundation. It opened in June 1954. The papers include extensive correspondence between the various partners, legal issues, a typescript study of the state of general practice in 1949, cuttings relating to health centres in general, and plans of the Centre.
