File: British Technology Group

Scope and Content

The BTG was a public body formed when the National Research and Development Council and the National Enterprise Board merged in 1981. The Group's activities included supporting universities in areas of technology transfer to the commercial sector, including patents. The BTG was privatised in 1992, and now operates as a private limited company. The file includes details of various aspects of the Group's relationship with the University (and UMIST) including the status of BTG agents with relation to the University, especially with the Research Consultancy Services staff. There is also discussion of a proposed Centre for Exploitable Science [ not taken forward]; the Bag’s academic enterprise competitions, and a BTG dinner in honour of Professor Dennis Smith, inventor of a dental cement (1989).
