File: Research Consultancy Service and the Department of Trade and Industry

Scope and Content

The Research Consultancy Service was established by the University in 1972 to improve the University's links with outside bodies, particularly businesses. It sought to foster University services and inventions which might be commercially valuable. The Service also provided advice to University staff on undertaking commercial consultancy work and for patent arrangements. The Service became increasingly high-profile in the 1980s as the University attempted to increase funding from commercial activities.

The file relates to the Service's associations with the DTI only, and includes the University's response to the DTI paper, "High Technology in the North West" (1985); and requests for support for a University project on the links between universities and the business sector.
