Manchester Education Precinct reports

Scope and Content

The Manchester Education Precinct was the University's major building project of the 1960s. It commenced in 1963 (although there had been earlier versions of this scheme), and involved the local council and UMIST as partners. The project was a comprehensive plan to redevelop the area in the vicinity of Oxford Road corridor as a distinct educational zone, in a partnership between the University, UMIST, the institutions which became Manchester Polytechnic, the Oxford Road hospitals and the city council. The plan made innovative proposals for transport networks, including raised pedestrian walkways along Oxford Road (most of which were never built).
