File: Student Accommodation

Scope and Content

Papers relating to student accommodation and the problems of finding suitable accommodation in a time of national housing shortage, and the provision and financing of new residences. UMIST students were eligible for University accommodation, although this was situated at some distance from the Sackville St campus. Eventually, UMIST built its own halls at Chandos and Wright Robinson, and jointly developed the Grosvenor St residences. The file includes the minutes of the Student Residences Construction Sub-Committee, a note on the implications of the Rent Act 1974 for Universities, a meeting of the Planning and Development Committee concerning multiple occupation and future accommodation requirements, and a letter from the Principal to the Leonard Wolfson Foundation requesting financial support.
