Correspondence on the death of Dorothy Pilkington

Scope and Content

Correspondence written on the death of Margaret Pilkington's sister, Dorothy Lawrence Pilkington. She died on 16 August 1971 after suffering a thrombosis on 21 July. The letters, from friends and acquaintances of Margaret Pilkington (including local dignitaries and figures in the art world), praise her character and achievements and reflect on the closeness of the two sisters. Christopher and Marjorie Simon note 'We can no more express our feelings about Dorothy alone, than we could think of our right hands without the left. They are not the same, but short of amputation they are inseparable.'

See PIL/1/2/43-44 for Margaret Pilkington's account of this time. See also PIL/3 for other papers relating to Dorothy Pilkington.
