From 1985 Woodcock was consultant respitory physician at the North West Lung Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester, and honorary senior lecturer at the University of Manchester. He had studied physiology at Manchester before gaining his medical qualifications in 1975, and held hospital appointments in Manchester and London.
