Treharne gained her medical qualifications from the University of Manchester in 1955 and held junior appointments at Booth Hall Hospital for Children. She was senior house officer in obstetrics and gynaecology at Oldham and District Hospital before being appointed clinical medical officer in community health for Cumbria Area Health Authority. Treharne married the Reverend Jack Strong in 1959 but continued to practice under her maiden name. She later became senior clinical medical officer in community child health for East Gloucestershire NHS Trust.
