Todd gained his medical education in Manchester where he gained a number of academic distinctions. He was lecturer in anatomy at the University of Manchester where he undertook research into histology of developing bone and cervical ribs. In 1912 he was appointed professor of anatomy at the Western Reserve University in Ohio, where he built up an important department of anatomy. Wingate Todd became known for his work on accurate measurement of the growth of the human body. Todd died in 1938, aged 53.
