Stoner gained his medical education at Sheffield University and when he joined the RAMC as resident anaesthetist he was seconded to the department of pathology there. After demobilisation, he remained on the staff of the MRC, and in 1953 transferred to the toxicology unit in Carshalton. In 1966 he became head of the trauma section, which, in 1976, was established as the MRC Trauma Unit at the University of Manchester. In 1977 he was appointed honorary chair of surgical science at the University. Stoner was known internationally for his work on the experimental analysis of shock, and he was particularly interested in energy metabolism. Stoner was later honorary consultant pathologist to Hope Hospital, Salford. He was a member of the Pathological Society and the Physiological Society. He was Royal Cameron Lecturer for the Royal College of Pathology in 1985 and Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1983. Stoner had retired by 1993.
