Stewart was born in Ireland and studied medicine at Queen's College, Belfast. In 1888 he settled as a general practitioner in Denton, where he remained for 57 years and became well known. He was also medical officer of health for Denton from 1910 to 1939 and was a fellow of the Society of Medical Officers of Health. Stewart was closely involved in the St John Ambulance and during the first world war was in charge of the Denton Red Cross Hospital.
