James Stephens was the brother of Edward Stephens and nephew of Joseph Jordan, but gained less acclaim. He studied at Manchester and University College Hospital and was surgeon to St Mary's Hospital from 1841 to 1848. Stephens was regarded as a clever obstetrician and invented an instrument for replacing the prolapsed funis. He had an extensive private practice with his brother in Bridge Street. Stephens was a member of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society. He died on 1 December 1887 aged 72.
