Possibly the son of Arthur Hughes Southam, John Armitage Southam was born on Manchester on 27 August 1929. He studied medicine at the University of Manchester and held resident appointments at MRI, Crumpsall Hospital, Withington Hospital and Salford Royal Hospital. He was later registrar surgeon to United Birmingham Hospitals before being appointed consultant surgeon to Epsom Hospital, Surrey.
