Shackleton was born in Burnley in 1931 and studied medicine at the University of Manchester and held house appointments at MRI. After holding various resident appointments, Shackleton was made consultant cardiologist at the Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital. She was later appointed consultant paediatrician to Macclesfield Hospitals. Shackleton continued to help the paediatric and mental health services after her retirement. She died from myelomatosis on 15 September 1997.
