Parrott was born in Northampton on 11 December 1954 and gained his medical education at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, qualifying in 1978. Parrott held resident, research and registrar appointments in Newcastle before coming to Manchester in 1990 as senior lecturer in surgery. Parrott gained his FRCS Eng in 1984 and an MD in 1989. He was later consultant in general, transplant and endocrine surgery at MRI.
