McLaren received his medical education at the Royal University of Ireland, studying in Galway, Belfast and Dublin. He was house surgeon to Hulme Dispensary in Manchester before being appointed senior resident medical officer to Salford Union Infirmary and later visiting medical officer to Salford Workhouse. McLaren later retired to Southport. He died on 11 March 1933.
