McKerlie studied at the University of Glasgow and was house surgeon to Clayton Hospital, Wakefield, before settling in Manchester as a general practitioner. He was secretary of the Manchester Local Medical and Panel Committee. He was also a member of MMS and president of Stretford Medical Society.
