McIntyre was born in Scotland on 20 November 1933. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester. McIntyre held junior appointments at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Scarborough Hospital before serving in the RAMC in Cyprus and Libya. He returned to England in 1962 as senior house officer at Ashton-under-Lyne General Hospital and also held appointments in Hastings and Durham. In 1967 McIntyre entered general practice in Birmingham, but shortly afterwards became ill. McIntyre died on 24 December 1968 from the effects of exposure after becoming lost on the Breconshire Mountains, aged only 34.
