Maitland was born at Merthyr Tydfil in 1875 and studied medicine at Edinburgh, Manchester and Paris. He was a demonstrator of physiology at the University of Manchester and lectured on the same subject at the Universities of Manchester, Birmingham and Wales. Maitland edited the Manchester Medical Gazette. He was physician to the Brompton Hospital and honorary physician to the Walsall and District Hospital. During the first war, he was director of the typhus colony at Skopje, Serbia. In 1920, Maitland joined the Cunard Company and in 1926 was appointed its medical superintendent. He retired in September 1946. Maitland made some important contributions to the field of industrial medicine, he was one of the original members of the BMA Committee on Fractures and was an international authority on workmen's compensation.
