James graduated in medicine from Cambridge University in 1970 and was senior registrar and lecturer in radiotherapy at Middlesex Hospital before being appointed consultant in radiotherapy and oncology at Christie Hospital in 1979. James was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, the Royal College of Radiologists, and the British Institute of Radiology.
