Dickson was the resident superintendent at Cheadle Royal Hospital. He published various papers on insanity. He received an MD from the University of Erlangen in 1854. Dickson was a member of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society, Manchester Medical Society and the Association of Medical Officers of Asylums for the Insane.
