Clarke began his training in anaesthesia at Victoria Hospital Blackpool, and continued it at South Manchester Hospitals and United Manchester Hospitals where he developed an interest in neurological anaesthesia. In 1959 Clarke was appointed senior registrar in anaesthetics at Stoke-on-Trent before becoming consultant to North Staffordshire Hospital Centre in 1961 where he established a service for neurosurgical anaesthesia. Clarke was a member of Manchester Medical Society and the Association of Anaesthetists. He died on 27 April 1974.
