Ahston trained at Owens College and proceeded to hold a number of house positions at London County Asylum, MRI, Bolton Infirmary, St Mary's Hospital and Manchester Union Hospitals before becoming a Medical Officer for the Department of Health and Bradley Scholar in Clinical Surgery at MRI. He was a member of Manchester Medical Society and sat on the committee from 1908 to 1909.
