Allen was house surgeon at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London. He later became a medical officer for the Chorlton Union, near Manchester. Allen was in general practice in central Manchester. He was a member of Manchester Medical Society and a vice-president of Manchester Medico-Ethical Society.
