Thompson gained his medical education at the University of Manchester and was resident medical officer to Bowdon Sanatorium. He was assistant tuberculosis officer for Cheshire before serving in the RAMC from 1915 to 1919. On his return, Thompson was appointed chief assistant medical officer for Derbyshire. From 1921 Thompson was in general practice, at Sedburgh, Cheshire, Essex and Coventry. In 1940 he returned to public health and was appointed assistant medical officer of health to Derby, and later in Northamptonshire. Thompson died on 26 December 1942.
