Glass was born on 15 April 1918 and was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester. After qualifying, Glass held junior positions at MRI and Salford Royal Hospital, and was a demonstrator in pathology at the University of Manchester. He was in the RAMC from 1942 to 1946. Glass was senior orthopaedic registrar at North Manchester General Hospital and at MRI before being appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon to North Manchester Hospitals Group. Glass was later appointed honorary lecturer in orthopaedic surgery for childhood at the University of Manchester.
