Finney received his medical education at Owens College Manchester and was a demonstrator in morbid anatomy there. He was honorary assistant in pathology at the Cancer Pavilion (Christie Hospital Manchester) and pathological registrar at MRI before settling in general practice in Wilmslow. Finney was a member of Manchester Pathological Society and for a time of Manchester Medical Society . He was a captain in the RAMC.
