Ellis was born in Congleton on 19 August 1898 and was educated at the University of Manchester. After serving in the Royal Navy Ellis held house positions at MRI and Brompton Royal Infirmary. Ellis held various positions at MRI including resident clinical pathologist, cardiographic registrar and resident medical officer, he was also a part time assistant lecturer at the University of Manchester. In 1933 Ellis was appointed honorary assistant physician at Ancoats Hospital Manchester, he was promoted to honorary physician in charge of cardiology in 1934 and held this post until his retirement in 1964. Ellis was also honorary physician at Manchester Northern Hospital and consultant physician at Withington Hospital Manchester. Ellis was a member of Manchester Medical Society , the Pathological Society of Manchester, the British Cardiac Society and the Association for the Study of Diseases of the Chest. Ellis died on 16 March 1970.
