Letter

Scope and Content

Letter from Alfred Gissing to Winifred Isaac. He writes: No, I did not read the article in the Daily Telegraph. In these days the one idea seems to be to exploit & make money out of the lives of well-known people... Sensation is what the public buys. In the case of my father, I foresaw that the Maitland book would return to life as a result of the broadcast: It will make money for the publishers & then return to the shades. The whole idea of that broadcast (between ourselves) was a mistake, & I was pretty sure that it would be.

Dated at Hôtel des Marécottes, Les Marécottes (Valais), Switzerland.
