Bundle of Papers re the Living of Wymondham co. Leics

Scope and Content

The bundle contains correspondence relating to the living of Wymondham, in Leicestershire. Rev John Foster, also perpetual curate of Carrington [see EGR4/2/8/2 above], held the living until his death in 1823, whereupon Rev Richard Cragg was presented to the living by the Lord Chancellor, Lord Eldon, on the recommendation of George Harry Grey (1765-1845), 6th Earl of Stamford. Cragg had served as Foster's curate at Wymondham for 27 years, and in 1822 was unsuccessfully recommended by Lord Stamford to the living of Coston co. Leics (EGR4/2/8/9/1-3). Later correspondence concerns the value of the living (/12-13) and repairs to the rectory and church (/14).

[Richard Cragg was rector of Wymondham until his death in 1849 at the age of 80. He was also master of Wymondham Grammar School: see J.A. Venn, Alumni Cantabrigienses: a biographical list of all known students, graduates and holders of office at the University of Cambridge from the earliest times to 1900, part 2 (1752-1900), 6 vols (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1940-54), vol. 2, p. 165.]
