George Harry Grey (1765-1845), Lord Grey, later 6th Earl of Stamford, was appointed as a Captain in the Royal Regiment of Cheshire Militia in 1786 (see EGR4/2/1/1 above), and served as Colonel of the regiment from 1789 until his resignation in December 1804 (see EGR4/2/1/2 and EGR4/2/2/2/2).
The series contains a bundle of returns of the regiment and lists of commissioned officers, 1761-1804 (EGR4/2/2/1), and five bundles of papers relating to the accounts of the regiment, 1801-23 (EGR4/2/2/2-6). John Edwards, the paymaster of the regiment, died in 1801 leaving his accounts in disarray and owing large sums of money to the officers of the regiment and to the Government on the public account. George Harry Grey (1765-1845), himself a creditor of Edwards, administered the fund established to discharge the debts. The accounts for the years when Edwards was paymaster were not finally closed until 1823.
