Basil Dean's production of Lesley Storm's 'fanciful comedy' Favonia had been destined for performance in the West End in 1957, but the production was pulled when the leading actress proved unsuitable. Dean instead offered to produce it at the Liverpool Playhouse, where the resident company (including a young Richard Briers) played it to packed houses.
