Letter

Scope and Content

From Elizabeth Hamilton in Abbey Street, Bath, Somerset, to Great Chesterfield Street, London. She has been prevented from writing previously by the move into her new house, which was followed by Kitty's dangerous illness, and her own confinement for seven weeks with the gout.

Her illness has unfortunately prevented her from seeking a closer acquaintance with Sally's friend Mrs Chambers. Also the Chambers family live so far out of town, that each visit costs seven shillings, which is disappointing as good company is so scarce.

Most people in Bath appear to be 'votaries of the card table', and were it not for this she should like the town very much, as in many respects it is a more suitable place of residence for a family of moderate means than London.

She is hopeful that Sally can stop over in Bath, during her intended autumn visit to Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.

Dr Crawford is visiting London, and will be able to give Sally more news about the Hamiltons.

She has received a letter from poor Miss Johnstone in Devizes, Wiltshire. Her brother really ought to place her in a better situation.

How is Sally's intended publication progressing?
