From Marianne Francis in Richmond, Surrey, to Great Woodstock Street, London, expressing the hope that Sally is recovered from her grief over the death of her friend Martha Swinburne.

One of her favourite pastimes is walking, a passion that she shares with her brother-in-law Henry Barrett. The other day they walked all the way to London, with the intention of calling on Sally, only to discover that she was visiting friends in Arundel, Sussex.

Mother has settled well in Richmond, although she has been quite agitated of late by the uncertainty about Clement's future career. He is studying at Greenwich near London, and is undecided whether or not to seek employment in England or India.
