Scope and Content

From Hugh Bourne in Bemersley, Staffordhsire, to Brother Timms. Some time ago he sent one of the 'plans' to the west of England, and received word from a friend there that he had managed to raise £3 for Belper Chapel, although he has not yet sent the money.

Bourne recently saw James Brownson at Brailsford, who was of the opinion that twenty people could be found in the vicinity of the Belper Circuit, who would be willing to subscribe £5 each for Belper Chapel. If this were the case, Bourne himself would be expected to contribute £5. Perhaps Timms would be able to recruit potential subscribers, if not for £5 then for smaller amounts.

He is very pleased that Brother Hockley has been able to rescue Nottingham's Hockley Chapel from it's difficulties 'and raise it into good circumstances'.

In September 1840 when Bourne was visiting the west of England, he received a letter from Andover in Hampshire asking for guidance as 'they had no prospect but of their chapel being sold'. Since then Brother Lee the Superintendent of the Circuit has been able not only to save the chapel, but has decreased the debt by £20. An account of their success has been prepared for the magazine. Brother Preston the Superintendent of the Brinkworth Circuit is charged with a similar responsibility, 'and it may be that the Lord is calling you into the same sort of work'.
